Hi friends! If you follow me on instagram or snapchat (ricecakes2012), you know that I just started my cross-country road trip from DC to Seattle. Yesterday was my first day on the road and I made it all the way to Indiana!
Day 1: Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana
I was up at the crack of dawn yesterday, mostly due to nerves, so I spent the morning gathering the rest of my belongings and preparing to ship a few boxes. Unfortunately, I realized too late that there wasn’t enough room in my car to mail everything in one trip, so I made a few trips to the Post Office as soon as they opened. I left sweating like a pig – DC was super humid yesterday!
I ended up filling every nook and cranny in my Ford Focus with my belongings. As much as I tried to pare down, it didn’t make sense to leave anything behind that I would need to re-buy. A few dollars here and there really adds up, especially when you’re on a grad student budget!
My suitcase kept me company in the passenger seat ↓. Now we just need to figure out how to get my mom in there too 😐
The drive went smoothly except for a few hiccups (like the canvas you see above flying forward and smacking me in the head when I had to stop suddenly.) My credit card was also blocked after I tried getting gas three separate times in 10 minutes (the first station I went to had an electrical problem so nothing was coming out of the pumps.) It’s all part of the adventure 🙂
There was a lot of jamming out to Michael Jackson, Michael Bublé and Frank Sinatra. I think I belted out “New York, New York” at least a dozen times.
I only made a few stops for coffee, food, and gas. Traveling solo was nice for the first 6-7 hours, but I got a little lonely towards the end of the trip. Just a few more hours to Missouri and my mom will be joining me for the remainder of the trip!
By the time you read this, I’m likely already back on the road. I’ll be hanging out with my family until Sunday, when we head to Denver, CO. I finally get to use the manicure/pedicure/facial that my dad gave me for Christmas! I’ve never had a facial before, so here’s to hoping all goes well 🙂
