Hi friends! Happy Monday! It’s been beautiful the past few weeks in Seattle and I am incredibly happy that it’s finally summer weather! I apologize for the silence over here – these summer months have been some of the most stressful and draining weeks I’ve ever experienced. I don’t feel comfortable opening up about everything that has transpired, but there may come a time when my emotions are less raw and I can more rationally talk about how I overcame certain challenges.
One of my favorite ways to relieve stress is to escape to the mountains. This past weekend, I was desperate for a hike with an incredible view and Tolmie Peak did not disappoint. These photos cannot even begin to capture the epic views from the trail, but my little iPhone did its best 🙂
Tolmie Peak is located inside of Mt. Rainier National Park, which is about a 2.5 hour drive outside of Seattle. I don’t even hesitate about driving that far for a hike these days – the ride is totally fun when there’s coffee, donuts, music, and good company! 🙂 Pro tip: a daily pass to get into Mt. Rainier National Park is $25. An annual pass is $50 and an annual America the Beautiful Pass is $80 and gives people access to over 2,000 federal recreation sites. If you’re local to the region, consider getting one of the two latter passes!
It was a balmy, cloudless day in Seattle on Sunday and we started the hike around 11AM. The total elevation gain was only about 1,100 feet but in the heat, we got a great workout! On the way up, we passed Mowich Lake and Eunice Lake (pictured below). On the way down, we decided to take a little dip in Eunice Lake and it was absolutely FREEZING. I only made it up to my waist before I froze (literally) and watched a few very daring people jump in before letting out ear-piercing screams.
One we reached Tolmie Peak, we unpacked our lunch and ate with our feet hanging over the edge of the little hut pictured below. It was the most stunning view I’ve ever witnessed, and the fact that we got to feast on a delicious lunch while looking at Mt. Rainier made for a really memorable afternoon.
To anyone is the Seattle-area or any visitors to the area, make sure to add Tolmie Peak to your list! I have a lot of other hikes that I’d love to recommend, so I’ll continue working on my hiking page for those of you interested.
